The Painted House, by John Grisham. I bought this as a used book at our local library here in Büdingen Germany. It was probably a left over from some soldier who moved on to Iraq or back home to th...

My review of C.C. Finlay's Patriot Watch is now available. This is a historical fantasy about what might have happened if witches were on both sides of the American Revolution. It's the first in a trilogy.

I just finished Hotel On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Sounds like it should be about a chocolate shop in a hotel but it's not. :) The chapters tell the tale of a Chinese boy in Seattle during WWII versus what is happening to the Chinese man in 1986. Quite interesing and good.

What a wonderful forum and great resource!

I'm in the middle of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. This is her first novel from what I understand. While she gets pretty wordy and long-winded with the story telling (apparently she did 10 years of research on this) it's a good read - about Dracula! He lives! Another fun "chapter" to add in our fascination of this slick monster.

Right now I'm reading The Hunters by Claire Messud. I'm on the first novella in the collection. I think she does a great job of meandering off on what seems like a tangent then tieing it into the story.

The last book read was ErRatic by ND Hansen-Hill. It's billed as a paranormal suspense novel but it also had some romance too. But it wasn't mushy. :) Some of the paranormal stuff isn't for the squeamish.

I just finished Imperium by Robert Harris. This is a wonderful historical fiction of Cicero's life written by his slave and secretary. This is a must read.

I have just finished JG Ballard’s ‘The Crystal World’. I feel rather disappointed in the novel, the characters and the plot did not catch my imagination. I have read Ballard’s ‘The drowned world’ and ‘The Drought’ and enjoyed both of them. I don’t think I would recommend ‘The Crystal World’ to anyone.

I just finished the original story featuring Sweeney Todd called "The String of Pearls: A Romance". I've seen Tim Burton's movie adaptation but I'm not familiar with any of the stage productions or any of the other movie adaptations. Overall I enjoyed it and it gave me a good grasp of the elements of a Victorian novel.
